Protecting The Environment

Re-purposing Possums.

Possum, Merino, silk knitwear has been developed in support of the possum control program. We produce products that gives value to the lives of possums that are exterminated for the benefit and conservation of New Zealand's environment, ecosystem, native birds and treasured bush.

New Zealand is home to many native and unique species of plants, birds and other reptiles and frogs. Our distinct biodiversity is due to our country being geologically isolated for millions of years. This geological isolation, make our beautiful country vulnerable to introduced pests and predators such as the Possum.

Possums were introduced to New Zealand in the mid-19th century from Australia. In New Zealand, a much smaller country, Possums are one of the top most ecologically disruptive and damaging animals and are therefore considered a national pest.

Possums not only destroy our native forests and crops, they also prey on the eggs and chicks of our native birds (such as the kiwi bird, the iconic native bird for New Zealandand carry the infectious disease, bovine tuberculosis that they spread to cattle.

This is why the Government agency (Department of conservation) has introduced the 'Predator free by 2050' programme which aims to completely eradicate; possums, rats and stoats from New Zealand as these introduced predators are identified as the top 3 most damaging to our native wild life, bush and ecosystem. This programme will give our native wildlife and native bush to flourish as well as improve our biodiversity.

We wish to educate our customers of this knowledge and the reason behind our possum fur products. Possums are NOT being farmed and later killed for their fur. Possums are in fact free roaming in New Zealand. Their fur is only collected once the animal is deceased. Our mission is to play our part in re-purposing the lives of possums into valuable products.
